Things to Do This Week in NYC (1/17-1/23)

(1/17-1/23) Looking for what to do in NYC this week and this weekend? The city continues to bounce back. Vaccinations are required for much of indoor life here (meaning you can feel safer if you head in to a restaurant, museum, or gym), but there's also tons to do out of doors. Read on for more in-person reopenings, festivals, pop ups, and other things to do in NYC this week.

Broadway and Off Broadway: All the Shows and Dates You Need to Know for Theatre's Return to NYC

As much as I’d like to dazzle you with a complete list of Broadway previews, openings and re-openings, the current roster is far from complete. Still, considering the Great White Way has been dormant for over a year and a half, the evolving influx of announcements is dramatically optimistic!

Omicron Update for NYC Tourism

Data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene suggests that Omicron has peaked in NYC. Positive tests and emergency room visits are both diving down, with the Bronx seeing a drop of 35% in cases requiring hospitalization. Governor Hochul notes the decrease and is considering letting the statewide mask mandate lapse February 2nd. Washington Post charts show Omicron's dramatically lower severity. Given the strong parallels to South Africa's experience with Omicron, we join the Governor in optimism that February will bring vastly improved conditions for city activities.

NYC Tourism Latest

Eric Adams has been sworn in as the 110th mayor of New York City and you can already feel the shift in energy. Adams's visit to Pearl River Mart in Chinatown yesterday included the announcement of an overhaul of the city's approach to small businesses, with agencies ordered to review the violations they issue and shift from punishing to partnering. Adams also advocated for speeding up the return to offices.

NYC #1 Holiday Tourism Destination and Other News

It's been another roller coaster news cycle for New York tourism. Omicron looks to be more contagious, but also more mild, so there's reason it think it won't be as disruptive as Delta. Travel restrictions were placed on parts of Africa, but it looks like they'll be lifted soon. The CDC has tightened Covid testing requirements for international travelers, but polls show Omicron fears won't significantly affect travel.
